My Jack growls at our children

by Michelle

When my Jack is relaxing on the couch, his bed, the kids bed, or really anywhere and the kids try to just pet him, he will growl at them. I think he even snapped at my 10 year old the other day. How can I correct this behavior?

Our 2 year old jack/pug mix growls when the kids try to pick him up while he is sleeping or if they stop scratching his back and he doesn't want them stop. He growls when my husband orders him off the couch too, like a grumpy old man, he gives my husband "the look" as he is getting down and growls away.
And he growls when he is eating his bones although any one of us can take it from him and he stops growling instantly.
I just think it is their personality. They aren't going to bite, they are just telling you they don't like what is happening at the moment or they are showing dominance over a bone or object. Our guy doesn't bear his teeth or anything and most of the time his tail is wagging as he is growling.

Hi, how old is your Jack? I have a 5 month old and he used to growl and sometimes still does when I take his harness off. Putting it on isn't an issue.. and I just firmly say no rrrrr Momma to him and that seems to relax him. I also sweet talk him as he's doing it and it seems to soothe him. I think they like to growl to show dominance or dislike.

I am not sure of advice as I have the same problem with my JRT....she hates my 2 year old niece and growls and barks the whole time she visits. however, she is fine with my 13 year old step son, barely pays attention to him.
