keeps getting out

I have a newly adopted JRT and he is about 6 years old. I have had him about 3 months. He was doing awesome until recently. He keeps getting out when I leave the house. I am so afraid that he is going to get run over or taken. Any suggestions about keeping him happy inside?

Escape Artist

My opinion is JRT's have such strong bonds with their people and are prone to "seperation anxiety". Also, they are natural born escape artists. You said "keeps getting out", do you mean out of the house or yard? We have a large, fenced yard and given all the space to run, it never occured to me our little darling should ever have reason to wonder. HAH!!! We tried all we knew to do including only allowing him out when someone could watch him. Even then, (the cunning little devil) he would wait for that perfect moment when your eyes would stray. I'm sure a trainer would frown on this, but we finally had to run an electric wire across the top rung of the fence. After the first two attempts to jump & climb over, he got the message. The wire is still there but is no longer "hot". He thinks about escaping every now and then, but sees that wire and thinks twice.
