Jack Russell + Maltese Mix

My son just received a Jack Russell and a Maltese mix puppy and I was wondering what kind of temperament she will have. Also, I was wondering about how big she will get, and if calling her a jack-malt is correct.

Louie.. NEW
by: PeggyHHH

I adopted a Jacktese last September from our local shelter. They told me he was 3 years old, but the vet told me he was almost a year and still more of a puppy. And, sadly, Louie had been abused from former owners. You couldn't pick him up or even touch his back, when the low growls would start.
He was a challenge from the beginning, but I discovered that he was house broken and quite intelligent. I learned quickly his way of telling me things, and eventually (with all of his stubborn traits) he LET me become the true head of our household.
We put a run in the back yard, as it is not fenced in, and to prevent Louie from chasing all of the kids, bicycles and cats that go by our house. He ran furiously back and forth on the run, and his excitement at daily walk was like giving a child a piece of candy.
He is very aggressive to other dogs and possessive of his yard space. A neighbor's German Shepherd, Dexter has come into our yard and attacked him several times, so I was forced to put up a fence.
My calls to animal control have gotten me (or my other neighbors with pets)absolutely nowhere. My appeals to the dog's owners have fallen on deaf ears. It's frustrating because Louie is constantly frighened, and barely stays in the yard for a few minutes while he out to potty! I have to take him to my mother's, friends' houses or playgrounds to let him unleash some of that energy.
His sense of smell is so keen, he knows anyone that has come into contact with Dexter and goes ballistic when they even step out of the house, which is very close to mine! It takes a lot to calm him down!
But, all in all, he is so sweet and loving and likes to sit on my lap when I'm watching TV and lies near me on the floor where I sleep. I can now touch his back and pick him up because of the trust we have formed. We have become good companions, and I love him to pieces!
Oh, and he has a lot of fur and I see the Maltese clearly in that ever-wagging tail!

Jack maltipoo NEW
by: Curty

I have a 14 week old Jack Russell Maltese Poodle mix named Snoop Hendrix... he is 50% jack Russell (his mom is jack) and 25% Maltese 25% poodle (his dad is a maltipoo) he is Soooo sweet, extremely smart and he loves to climb/dig... He loves people and other dogs and is very affectionate. He's about 4 pounds I think I love him his coat is changing he has blacks spots that are turning reddish brown and is a pleasure to have. He's very obedient and learns really quickly other than a few accidents he's house broken and it took no time at all. He's extremely active and can jump soooo high.

update on Odie NEW
by: Anonymous

Odie is now 5 months old. He is completely housebroken. Crate training was the easiest way for us. He is very loving. Full of energy one minute, laying in our laps the next minute. We finally got him to stop lunging at our faces by placing him in another room where he couldn't see us as soon as he started lunging. Puppy mouthing on your arm etc, is normal and we learned to let him do that so he knows what's acceptable and what's too hard. Also he seems to love shoes so we're working on the command "drop it"-trade a treat for the item you want them to drop. I thought this was weird at first, seemed like rewarding them for doing something they shouldn't but all he has to hear now is "DROP IT" and whatever he has in his mouth he drops. He will sometimes grab a show, find us and drop it in front of us..

Odie is my baby
by: Anonymous

We got Odie a jack/maltese mix from shelter and he is so loving. We are going to have to take him (us) to obedience school. He has bursts of energy. When he gets super excited he likes to lunge at us and nip. Then he will be exhausted and just lay down. He loves his toys. He loves to lay in my lap. He is now 12 weeks old. We've had him 1 month.
He is smart. He knows 3 tricks already. He is doing better at housebreaking. Our vet said it usually takes about 15 weeks for them to "get it". Right now he weighs about 8 lbs. I'm hoping he doesn't get much bigger. He has the jack face and fluffy wiry hair. We did have to put up gates to keep him out of the carpet area..he likes to chew..even though he has lots of toys and chew things. Hoping he grows out of that quickly. He's a sweetheart and I feel blessed to have him. Wish I could put a picture so you could see him.

love our jack-tese
by: HolbrookJoe

best dog we've ever had....full of energy but obedient and smart (if you take the time to properly train). Amazingly fast, LOVES to play and run in the backyard chasing sticks, ball, large empty bleach bottles (we remove labels and rinse well first, of course). Will not wet or soil in the house after initial housebreaking (took several months, but it was a nasty winter in 2009-10 and we could not let him out too often). Knows 6 to 8 of his toys by name (Kong, 'squeaky bone', ball, etc..) and will bring them to you by name. Probably has the capacity for even more if we had a little more time to teach. Still learning new tricks even at 18 months old. Currently training him to bring our pajama's to us from the other end of our house. He's quite similar to most of the other comments: possessive, watchful/aware, curious, smart, wary of small children but loves people and most other dogs, will follow you anywhere but is also content when left alone. No problem with him sleeping thru the night after housebreaking, he can happily sleep 8-9 hours undistributed at night. Goes thru chew bones like crazy, even some of the Nyla bones. But he was very easy to train with no chewing of shoes, furniture, etc. Highly recommend a Jack-tese. Neighbors think he looks like a stuffed animal that came to life. Very cute.

I have a 5 year old Jack Russell/Maltese. His name is Yogi and he was so easy to train and we love him so much. However, he started having seizures about 2 years ago and I have him on phenobarb for life. He also has allergies and is always sneezing and has ear problems. The latest he has gained weight and now has a thyroid condition that also needs medicine for life. I would not trade him for the world. Even with all his problems he will kiss you to death and loves everybody.

Rosemary...

is 5 months and the first time i've owned a small breed. She brings laughter into the house every day. Reasonable energy level, loves to play, easily trained and so bright. The deck is covered with sticks she brings home from our walks. Everyone in the neighbourhood knows Rosemary and she can't wait to say to hi to them. She looks total Jack - tan/black markings on her head with 3 round black spots down her back. Her brother got all the Maltese fur. Just adorable.

She was house trained at 10 weeks and is the best dog we could ever have hoped for, she is really scruffy at times but the cutest wee dog ever. She is full of energy but loves her quiet time too, no problems with chewing so far, happy with her toys and bones for now.She is really tiny still but i'm sure she will grow more, she is white with peachy coloured ears and stripe on her back. If you get the chance to own one of these dogs, take it. Very intelligent and loving.

I posted an earlier comment about being afraid
of what my Jackteses would turn out to be. They
are absolutely adorable! Everyone wants one.
They are only one month old but already they
run around growling and barking. Three are
tri-colored even though their mother is only
tan and white. Their markings are like their
mother but they have the face of a maltese.
So they look like little jersey cows with
bear faces. Also, the hair is longer than
the short-haired mother.

We just adopted a 7 month Jack-tese. We are finding her to be the perfect dog. You can't look at her without smiling. She is cute beyond expectation. She is a "Lunge-Licker" and very high energy, but also can calm down well. She HAS to be where we are to the point of jumping into the shower! She loves to run in the backyard and bark at the neighbor dogs. Right now she's about 10 pounds. I've never seen a more adorable dog, Especially when she tilts her head, which is often!! Jack-tese
by: Hazel's mom

I have a Jack Maltese mix that is now 6 mos old. She is a a true love bug with just as much energy as my 4 year old son. She was a challange to house break. She loves to run and chase squirrels, birds and anything that moves. She gives constant kisses and is a champion snuggler. She will willingly let you sleep in your bed-if you promise belly rubs. Fearless and loyal- she will never fail to alert you if something is not right.
I got her from a situation that was not quite favorable for health and safety of a small puppy. She was marketed as a Maltese-Chi mix. She is a beautiful white color with tan tinged ears and a slightly tanish/white stripe running down her back.
Although I do not support puppy mills or irresponsible breeding for profit; I am lucky to have a great dog (and very cute, too) like our jack-mix and happy to have been able to provide a happy and safe home for a loving soul that may not otherwise have been so fortunate.

My Jack-tese must be the odd one out
by: Fran

I have a two yr old female Jack-tese and she is not the ball of energy other's describe. She is sweet and friendly when she feels like playing but for the most part she has a very low energy level and keeps to herself. In retrospect, I probably should not have gotten her because I work and she is home alone all day (with the cat who she really likes). When I am home, she pretty much keeps to herself (sleeps under the bed) and has bursts of energy but for the most part she is very sedate. I have had her vet checked numerous times and they can't find anything wrong with her...the vet just says "she's independent".! I am not used to having a dog that does not want to hang out with me. :(

If you have any worries about the nature of Jack russell & maltese mix dogs DON'T.
We have one and he is a beast. He is the most loving and kindest dog i've ever known. He doesn't nip or bite and even when you tease him he tries to bite you but can't and just ends up licking you. He even looks after other dogs and us like he's a little nurse.
But one downside about him is his obsession for toys, but mostly his RED KONG.
We wouldn't change him for the world and are even looking to take him with us to Australia.

Jack-Tese
by: Baxter's Ma-Ma

I too have recently become a happily worn out mother of a Jack-tese puppy about a month ago (Baxter is now 11-weeks old) and it has been an experience I'll tell you. I love him to pieces and he is a little bundle of energy. My only real difficulty is with the nipping of fingers, but I've used the "Bitter Block" spray and that helps some. My advice to anyone who picks a dog with any amount of Jack Russell have on hand several chew toys, Kongs, rope toys, balls and "Nyla-bones". Jack-tese are very sweet and loving and just want to hang out or play with "their" pet.
