Jack Russell Gets Nervous

by Reader Question Followed By Suggestion From Our Vet

Reader Question: My neighbor has a 4lb small dog that barks and every time he barks, my dog gets very nervous and tries to hide in various areas.

Normally he hides behind the TV, but also tries to get behind my dresser and sometimes even the bath tub.

I tried to get them together to meet so he would know where the noise is coming from, but my dog just runs away.

I tried the calming jacket and that doesn't work either.

How can I help him to not be scared.

Suggestion From Our Veterinarian On a Nervous Jack Russell Terrier

Hello,

It does sound like your dog is becoming anxious whenever he hears your neighbor’s dog barking. I wonder if this is his only trigger or if he also exhibits symptoms of anxiety at other times.

Coming up with an effective treatment plan would really depend on the results of a full assessment of his physical wellbeing and his behavior. Your veterinarian might be able to help you come up with a behavioral modification plan or refer you to a specialist who is in a better position to do so.

In the meantime, you could try some of the products that other owners have reported to be helpful under similar circumstances such as Rescue Remedy, Homeopathic supplements, or dog appeasing pheromone.

It’s also important that you don’t inadvertently reinforce your dog’s behavior by attempting to soothe him or by scolding him when he becomes anxious. As long as it is safe to do so, the best option is to ignore the behavior that you want to disappear.

Best of luck,

Jennifer Coates, DVM
