Coat Question

Hello We recently got a JRT from a breeder. We had asked for a smooth coat and were assured he was going to be one. He is now 3 months old and he most certainly isn't! It honestly doesn't matter to us as we are crazy about him however we are wondering at what age will we be able to tell what his coat will actualy look like?
