why does my dog keep holding his left paw in the air and sometimes limp but does note flinch when i try to examine it seems worst first thing in the morning

Is it one of the back legs? If so it could be that the knee cap keeps dislocating. If your dog is trotting and then skips a couple of steps then puts the leg down again.
