Vet Suggestions Regarding Dog First Heat

Hi Maggie,

Four months is on the young side for a dog’s first heat. Around six months would be more typical.

Bleeding from the vulva can be associated with other conditions, however. Your dog might have a urinary tract infection or a wound in the area.

I recommend that you have your dog examined by a veterinarian. He or she can give your dog a physical exam, perform any necessary diagnostic tests (e.g., vaginal cytology or a urinalysis), and tell you what is going on and if it is a potential problem.

Best of luck,

Jennifer Coates, DVM
