Will They Change Color?

My jack russell is mostly white. Will he change color to more brown and white or will he stay the way he is?

Help me with recognizing what breed my puppies are.
by: Anonymous

I have a jack Russell female. She was a stray, someone set her out on the road. she came to my home at five minute's after midnight on New Years. I took her in. She looked as though she hadn't eaten in months. I loved her at first sight, I had no idea she was expecting little ones of her own. Not knowing who the father of her puppies were, we didn't know what expect. The are solid white with pink ears and bellies. She had four. would anyone know if they get spots later. A Sharp Tennessee.

It's wonderful that you took in this stray Jack Russell and are caring for her and her puppies. In many cases, Jack Russell Terriers' coats can change as they grow, and spots may appear or become more pronounced over time.

It's possible that the puppies' coats will develop spots as they mature, but this can depend on their genetic makeup since you don't know the father's breed or coat characteristics. Jack Russell Terriers can have various coat colors, including white, white with black or tan markings, or a combination of these colors. Sometimes, the spots can be faint or hidden under the white fur at birth and become more noticeable as the puppies grow.

Keep an eye on the puppies' coat patterns as they develop over the next few weeks and months. Their true coat colors and markings will become more evident as they grow older.

belly changes color in summer
by: Anonymous

Our Jack/Chihuahua mix has a pink belly in the winter, then gradually changes color to light brown spots, to dark brown belly in the summer. Why is that?

Editor Comment

The color change in your Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix's belly could be attributed to several factors, including sun exposure, seasonal changes in skin and coat, and pigmentation changes.

Sun exposure: Just like in humans, a dog's skin can darken due to sun exposure. The increased melanin production is the body's response to protect the skin from UV radiation. This could be the reason why your dog's belly gets darker during the summer months.

Seasonal changes: Dogs may experience changes in their skin and coat due to seasonal factors, such as temperature, humidity, and sunlight. These changes can affect the color and texture of their skin and fur, resulting in a darker or lighter appearance.

Pigmentation changes: Some dogs naturally have changing pigmentation in their skin and fur throughout their lives. This can result in varying shades and patterns on their body, including their belly.

My jack is white with a tan face, spot on his back, and tail. His tan face and spot are turning white.

Color Capers
by: Charlene and Mike (Mee-kah)

Typically most puppies keep their original coloration, but sometimes they do develop more spots or different colors. I think that my Jack gained 1 or 2 spots extra on her lower back...

Maybe
by: Stefanie

I got my jack russell when she was about 7 weeks and she had brown eye patches, one brown patch on each side and a patch around her tail. After a few months she got two extra little brown spots on her back and one on her snout. The black spots all over her skin (that are visible on the belly or if you look under the hair) got much darker as she got older too. They are black now. The new spots she got seem to come from the black spots that got darker when she got older. Also, her original large patches have changed their shape somewhat.
