How much should a 7/8 month old jack russell eat, and how many times a day?

My JR is 8 months old-Bella

I tried to put her on a schedule for eating but it didn't work out so well. So I leave the food down and she eats when she wants, and once a day I will give her dry food mixed with can food. She loves it and eats it all up!

start feeding less
by: Stefanie

At 7 or 8 months, you can start feeding less. For my dog, I started her on a twice a day feeding at this point, but with bigger portions than what a 1 year old dog would eat. She or he should still be on a puppy food or higher protein diet.

The best thing to do is to regularly feel the dogs ribs. The ribs shouldn't be poking out, but you should definitely be able to palpate them. If you are having trouble feeling the ribs, then feed less. Every dog has a different activity level. If your dog is very active, then he/she will need much more food. I made the mistake of feeding my dog the same amount while she was in a crate and recovering from surgery for 6 weeks. She went from 15 lbs to 19 lbs. baaaaddd. She's on a diet now. :)
