biting/nipping

I have a 9 year old EJRT that i've had since he was 10 weeks old. He has always been loving, gentile and affectionate. There have been a few occasions that he has bitten. It has usually been older men and usually when they are exiting or entering. Is he being protective? How do I "nip" this in the bud?
