Reader question on how to treat a dog smell

My Jack Russell Terrier is 17 years old and is and always has been a inside dog. However he has developed this horrible smell. Someone suggested it could be an anal issue.

I bathe him and it does not help any help with this issue would be appreciated...

Thanks

Vet Suggestion Treating Bad Dog Smell

Hi Mike,

Your dog’s foul odor could certainly be coming from his anal glands. They are located at roughly the 5 o’clock and 7 o’clock positions around his anus. If you see redness or discharge in this area, they are probably the culprits.

On the other hand, bad smells can also be associated with skin disease, infected wounds, ear infections, and oral disease. If the source of the smell (and its solution) is not immediately obvious to you, make an appointment with your veterinarian.
