Rear Legs Cramping

Hi, I have a 5 year old male (neutered)that periodically gets cramps in his hind legs. They act like charlie horses in his muscles. Have you ever heard of this? And should i be overly concerned? I do JRT trials with him (racing, lure, trailing/locating etc). He is very muscular and athletic. Thanks

Cramps
by: RJ

I have a 4 year old he is also very muscular. I love walking with him and watching him run...He was having problems with his left leg (and sometimes right) and would hold it off the ground while he trots. He uses both hind legs when runs at speed. He was diagnosed with luxating patella in both legs. I had the surgery to correct them both, but he still hops on one leg just as before. He is still having the same symptoms as before the surgery. I didn’t notice at the time, but he was having cramps and the muscle behind his leg just above the knee cap would get very hard. Now I believe that his main problems were cramps, although he needed the other surgery.

Luxating Patella
by: stefanie

Have you had him checked for luxating patella? This is what my JRT has and it looks like a cramp when the patella come out of the joint. She has to hop around or stretch her leg back for it to go back it. It seems to cause some pain too. We are considering surgery.

Apparently it is not too uncommon for JRTS.
