How far can a JRT walk for?

We recently adopted a JRT and are wanting to take it on day hikes with us. Does anyone know how far he could walk with us once we built him into very good shape? The area would be slightly hilly but nothing extreme. I just don't want to kill the poor thing on too long of a hike!
