Reader Question on reason Dog is Bleeding from Rear (bum)

My Jack Russell Terrier Bandit is bleeding from his bum, not directly but the side. He is pooping ok, playing ok, and eating ok.

Please help cause he doesn't like anyone to touch him but us.

Suggestion from our Veterinarian regarding how to help a dog bleeding from rear (bum)

Hi Jardin,

I can’t say what is wrong with Bandit based solely on your description, but he may be dealing with a ruptured or infected dog anal gland. He has two glands, one on either side of his anus (at about 5 and 7 o’clock, so to speak), and they are a common source of problems in this area.

You should get Bandit in to your veterinarian for an exam and appropriate treatment before his condition gets any worse.

Regards,

Jennifer Coates, DVM
