My Jack Russell has dark patches on her tummy, underarms and thigh. The skin has a light bruising effect. She is 3 yrs old and doesn't appear to be sick. There areno signs of pain, what is this condition?

Veterinarian Suggestion on Causes of Dog Skin Bruising

Hello De,

I can’t tell you with any degree of certainty what might be going on with your dog without examining her, but a couple of possibilities top my rule out list. First, the areas that you describe typically have only a sparse covering of hair.

Hair, or fur if you prefer, protects the skin from extremes in temperature, sunlight, contact with chemicals, and other irritants. It is not unusual for the skin in these areas to darken over time as a way to protect itself.

On the other hand, if what you describe are truly bruises, your dog may have an abnormality in her blood clotting system. This can develop due to genetics or exposure to toxins like certain types of rodenticides.

If your dog is acting sick in anyway, get her in to see the veterinarian ASAP. Otherwise, just keep an eye on the situation and as long as it doesn’t get worse, bring it to your vet’s attention at your next regularly scheduled appointment.
